Key Theatre, Peterborough, January 22 to 26
Possibly the most bonkers show you’ll see this Christmas, The Fenland Screamers And Other Boggy Tales had me – and as far as I could tell the entire audience – laughing from the ‘off’ and we barely stopped to draw breath.
It’s another crazy tale from the pens of the extraordinarily talented Pat Whymark and Julian Harries and tells of the unlikely coming together of four quirky souls when they arrive for a house party, invited by a host that none of them can quite place.
Set sometime in the 1920s, the story (or stories in fact) unfolds with the energy and pace of a steam train. Hold on to your hat because there’s only one choice and that’s to just go with it! The unstoppable cast of just five play more than 20 characters with all the hilarity, humour and wit we’ve come to expect from Eastern Angles.
This capable, clever cast plays and sings original songs, copes with multiple costume (and character!) changes all while juggling the complexities of performing ever changing story lines and timing their comedic delivery to perfection. A complete (but friendly) stranger, seated beside me had to clutch my arm more than once, he was laughing so hard! If you’re a lover of the mad-cap panto style, but perhaps with a little more sophistication than the traditional ‘it’s behind you’ delivery, then you need to book your tickets today – Eastern Angles will not disappoint!
