Residents of the village of Capel St Mary were delighted to present this year’s Villager of the Year Award to Bob Morrison for all his hard work in the community and dedication to village life. Local developer, Hopkins Homes, sponsored the award in recognition of the contributions to community life of the winner and the nominees.

Now in its second year the Capel St Mary Villager of the Year award was set up by Stephanie Bonfield as a way of saying thank you to those members of the community who go above and beyond to help their neighbours and contribute to village life.

Stephanie said: “One look at our village’s Facebook group and you can quickly get an idea of the fantastic community spirit in Capel St Mary. Many village residents bend over backwards to help others promote community activities and events, run local clubs and organisations in an effort to appeal to the wide demographic of our village, making it a fantastic place to live.

“We were delighted to announce Bob Morrison as our winner! He threw himself into village life 47 years ago and has been a dedicated member of the community ever since. He has been involved with endless amounts of community activities ranging from football coaching to leading the local scouts’ group and much more. Bob is a role model to many and has done our village proud!”

Money raised from sponsorship of the award will go towards the purchase of a 20ft artificial Christmas Tree, adorned with 24,000 lights. The tree will be placed at the centre of the village for all to enjoy over the festive period and will form part of the annual Christmas fair and carol singing on Christmas Eve.

Stephanie continued: “We’re very grateful to Hopkins Homes for the donation to our Raise the Tree fund. The tree will be reused each year and will become a reminder of the kind acts and support residents have given each other – we’re hoping Bob will agree to play a starring role at the annual tree lighting later this year!”

Joshua Hopkins of the Hopkins Charitable Fund said: “Capel St Mary is a delightful village and this award is testament to the strong sense of community within it. Building communities as well as homes lies at the heart of our ethos, so we were delighted to support the fantastic Villager of the Year initiative. We’re pleased residents like Bob are recognised for their dedication to the community and are looking forward to seeing the tree this Christmas.”

Over 75 nominations were received for Villager of the Year with residents asked to vote for the winner from a shortlist of three. The winner was revealed at the annual Capel Day event.
