Local Rotary donates £1500 to help support struggling Suffolk families

Deben Rotary are proud to donate £1500 to Suffolk based family support charity Home-Start in Suffolk

This welcome donation will be used to help recruit and train more much needed volunteers to help families across the county. Richard Boother, President of Deben Rotary said, “We are pleased to support a local charity, who do so much invaluable work in our community.”
Home-Start in Suffolk CEO Tara Somers said “We are truly grateful to Richard and all at the Deben Rotary for choosing to support Home-Start in Suffolk, particularly during this uncertain time. Our organisation, like many charities, has had to suspend all our key fundraising events which would usually raise the vital funds needed to continue the work of our team. Donations such as this are so important, and we are thankful for all the support that the Rotary have given us.”
Home-Start in Suffolk has been supporting Suffolk families for over 20 years and is instrumental in early intervention to prevent families reaching crisis point. Helping families as they navigate through challenges such as bereavement, long term illness, domestic abuse, isolation, poor mental health, disabilities and so much more, Home-Start in Suffolk work alongside the statutory services and are highly respected amongst their partners and peers. The majority of their family referrals come through professional partners however families are able to self-refer too.
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 Crisis, Home-Start in Suffolk has adapted their important volunteer support service to adhere to the physical distancing guidance, providing telephone and video call support for struggling families in place of the home-visiting service they are well known for. This is working well and there are plans afoot to add telephone support as an additional service once this crisis is over.
“The current Coronavirus outbreak has seen us having to adapt our services quickly and the positive feedback we have had as a result has been wonderful.” Says Tara, “Our volunteers are at the heart of our organisation and have all been extremely flexible, adapting their support and offering even more support hours where they can. We are so fortunate to have such a fantastic team of volunteers.
“We believe that during this crisis and in-deed once this crisis is over the need for our services will continue to increase and we are therefore actively recruiting new volunteers, providing a new short-term online training course until things return to normal.
Deben Rotary Club is part of the Rotary International global network of service volunteers - the world's largest service organisation for business and professional people. The members at Deben Rotary are instrumental in helping those in need and working towards world understanding. Being a member of the Rotary is a fulfilling role, and Rotarians can get involved as much or as little as their time will allow. But there is much more. Deben Rotary usually meet each Monday but since Lockdown began their meetings have switched to an online zoom call each fortnight. Their ethos, commitment and local focus allows them to work towards supporting local charities and organisations and in working with Home-Start in Suffolk they are giving back to families in the Suffolk Community.
