Suffolk homeowners see benefits of self storage during refurbishment projects

A Suffolk business is seeing record occupancy from domestic customers as more people decide to refurbish their existing homes, rather than move house in the current political and economic climate.

HomeStore, with branches on Ransomes Europark in Ipswich and the Anglian Lane Industrial Estate in Bury St Edmunds, has reported a hike in the number of homeowners using its facilities to store furniture and other household items whilst their property is being extended, refurbished or decorated.

Established 14 years ago as part of a removals business to provide storage for home contents between moves, the company has grown steadily as more people have seen the benefits of self-storage.

Historically, its customer portfolio has seen significantly more business users than domestic, but this year the percentage of space rented is split equally between the two.

Martin Tuck, Managing Director of HomeStore says: “Our facilities are currently seeing increasing popularity with domestic customers who for a range of reasons – including Brexit uncertainty and the cost of moving – are refurbishing or extending their properties, rather than moving house.

“What many discover is that we offer great flexibility in terms of contract length, as well as size of unit. We can also accommodate customers’ changing requirements during the project – upsizing or downsizing to suit their needs.”

Stephen Hembling and his family had to move out of their home in a Suffolk village whilst work on a large two-storey extension project was carried out – and find somewhere suitable to store all their furniture and possessions.

Stephen said: “Having already become a business customer with HomeStore, I then asked about arrangements for domestic storage and was delighted to discover that the terms were extremely flexible – a minimum of one week.

“The facilities are so well maintained and we felt happy that our items would be kept in pristine condition there, as well as having easy access should we need to go and retrieve something. Their ample on-site parking has also been very useful and the security is second to none with double barrier gates and CCTV.”

Sophie Adams and her husband needed somewhere to store units and appliances for their new kitchen for a few weeks. Sophie says: “We were concerned about housing our lovely new kitchen in a space where messy building work was still going on. I telephoned to ask about the minimum length of a contract and was surprised and delighted to hear that it is one week! This meant that we could hire a unit to store our new kitchen in a clean and safe environment until all the building work, including plastering, had been completed.”

HomeStore provides highly secure facilities, with on-site car parking inside a double barrier gate and monitored by CCTV. Customers can have access to their unit 24 hours a day, seven days a week by using the individual pin-code entry system.
