Havensfield Eggs announced as Suffolk county champion for Producer of the Year Awards 2018
Following a month of fierce campaigning Havensfield Eggs has been crowned Suffolk county champion in the East of England Co-op’s Producer of the Year awards 2018.
The free range egg producer from Suffolk, run by Alaistaire and Fiona Brice, is joined by Essex champion Wicks Manor Pork and Norfolk champion Buxton Potatoes for the second round of the highly anticipated annual competition. Havensfield Eggs beat Leiston’s Purely Pesto to take the Suffolk title.
From 1st January to 31st January, a record-breaking 28,638 votes were cast across the region by shoppers and members of the East of England Co-op.The total votes eclipses the 19,392 votes made last year, when Coggeshall-based Great Tilkey Honey took the overall Producer of the Year crown.
To help drum up votes Alaistaire Brice from Havensfield Eggs and Prudence Battle, of Purely Pesto, took part in the Tremendous Tractor Taste Tour at the University of Suffolk’s Waterfront Building in Ipswich. The unique one day campaign trail saw the East of England Co-op travel the length of the region on a tractor giving free samples from the nominated producers to the public and encouraging them to vote in the Producer of the Year awards.
“We are delighted to be chosen as this year’s Suffolk finalists,” said Fiona Brice of Havensfield Eggs. “A massive thank you goes to our girls who work hard all year round to lay the eggs, as well as our fantastic team who collect, pack, grade and deliver our eggs, to ensure they reach our customers in perfect condition.
“It is great that the East of England Co-op actively supports us as local producers and puts our brand on their shelves, it gives us a real sense of pride in what we do.”
Havensfield Eggs and the other county winners will now be visited by a panel of food and farming experts before the overall Producer of the Year 2018 is crowned at the annual East of England Co-op Supplier Supper on 15 March.
Roger Grosvenor, Joint Chief Executive at the East of England Co-op said: “Congratulations to Havensfield Eggs and all our regional winners. We have enjoyed a tremendous month of voting and all winners and nominees deserve a lot of praise for their hard work which has been rightfully recognised through the high numbers of votes seen this year.
“This competition is always a great way to encourage our customers to ‘think local’ and the record-breaking votes received reflects their passion to enjoy locally sourced food and support the producers who supply this fantastic produce.”
The East of England Co-op works with approximately 100 local producers through its multi-award winning Sourced Locally initiative, which has generated over £62 million for the regional economy since launching in 2007. Producer of the Year plays a vital role in continuing the Sourced Locally ethos by encouraging shoppers to consciously buy local and quality produce throughout the year.
